A Bald Journey. Travelling Through Grey and Moving on in Age.

This is a public announcement.  I declare it’s only a matter of time before I go from a full head of hair to a completely bald look.  It’s a future fact.  I want to document my journey.  Share why it’s important for me to go through such an experience.

I’m a consumer of hair dyes.  Years of wearing different shades of colours.  From lights to darks.  I don’t know what sits beneath the products I place on my noggin.

About seven years ago I started to see specks of white coming through.  In denial I put it down to living in a sunny state and having blond hair.  The answer was now clear.  The sun was naturally bleaching my wavy mop.

At the time I must have been more comfortable with failing eye sight.  Rather than coming to terms with this colour starting to surface on my head.

Over the last two years it was obvious greys were starting to dominate.  I could no longer fool myself.  Being blond was a part of my history now.

The grey realisation had me shocked.  I ignored it for a month.  Or more like seven years and one month.  I didn’t want to face it.  White and grey were my favourite colours.  Until they started to appear on my scalp.

How was I to consolidate aging?  Was this where I was meant to start seeing myself as matured?  What did that even mean?

Superhero Strengths to the Emotional Rescue.

You have a lot of strengths in common with Superman.  Yes you should continue reading.  In fact I want you take this post seriously.  So, I’ll never say you’ll be able to leap tall buildings in a single bound or soar through the air, like a bird or a plane.

Superman is a service provider.  Fighting crime.  Caring and protecting humanity.  In times of need, he showed his strength, courage and passion.  He did whatever he could to maintain order.

However, this Superhero has one weakness.  When the Baddies wanted to get the better of him, they used kryptonite to take advantage.  It’s their only weapon.

Can you guess what your kryptonite is?  There aren’t too many things that can take you down.  What has the potential to weaken you?

  • Not the people around you.
  • Not the work you do.
  • Not where you live.
  • Not what you own.
  • Not your education levels.
  • Not the clothes you wear.
  • Not the car you drive.
  • Not what you look like.

Emotions Don’t Do Any Damage – Actions Do.

Think about all the emotions you feel when visiting the Circus.  The first act is with the monkeys and clowns.  We giggle at the cheekiness of their tricks.

Then the harrowing acrobats flipping through the air.  Leaving us breathless and in awe of their death defying performance.

You’ve never seen all the young girls in the audience so quiet when the Princess comes riding out on her Pony.  Wondering if your child has forgotten to blink, she’s so enthralled.

As that act finishes the Cowboys and Indians come out for the boys.  Now it’s their turn to be captivated.  The bad guys start to take over and the audience is in an uproar.

Each act delivered to stir all your emotions.  While we’re spell bound by the performances we don’t feel a sense of loss when one act comes to an end.  We watch, observe and enjoy it for what it is.  A passing moment.

That’s how we should experience our feelings.  Every emotion makes itself known to us.  It has the potential to shift our mood.  When all we had to do was acknowledge it without reacting.  Aware it will move on.

Confidence Shines When You Enjoy Who You Are. (Part 2)

Why is it that we have confidence and are able to manage well on some days?  Other times we feel jilted by who we are?  Where self-assurance once was, scepticism has now taken its place.  How do other people keep a steady flow of confidence?  Why does it appear that yours comes and goes?

Blame it all on those feelings.

Think about how many different emotions you feel in one day.  Our moods change depending on the person we’re communicating with and situation we’re in.

The secret is not to react to your emotions.  Think of yourself as one of the sky gods.  While you’re in discussions you’re also watching all the action from high above.

The sky god does not react to the emotions only observes and feels them.

Other contributing factors.

As if those pesky emotions aren’t enough.  Add to the mix other extenuating circumstances.

Your eight hours of sleep.  Being well rested certainly helps everyone through their day.  Think about when you don’t get enough shut eye.

Parents will confirm how hard their days are when bubs kept them up all night.  Tolerance levels go down.  Stressful situations are not managed nearly as well as they would have been had the right amount of sleep been had.

Being hungry reduces concentration levels.  Irritability and impatience are telling signs.  Becoming physically weak without food can slow down our thought processors.  Fueling up balances our mood.

The immediate attitude shift.

Have you ever felt a little fragile?  Maybe indecisive or a little edgy.  Then someone pisses you off.  There’s an instant mood change.  Uncertainty no longer lingers in the mind.  You’re clear about what you stand for and where you’re at.

These days you go from second guessing yourself to immediate decision maker.  This is a reminder that confidence was not far.  It was just kicking back and did not need to be in command.

Forgive and forget.  Don’t you find it odd, these two words are combined to form a sentence?  Life has delivered hardship.  An experience forever imprinted in your memory banks.  You may become forgiving but you will never forget.

Let’s face it, forgiving others is a tough process.  Although the alternative leaves you condemned to replay the torture over in your mind.

You don’t just wake up one morning reading something on the internet and start forgiving.  There’s countless steps one must travel through mentally to let go of the past.

Many an evil have others had to endure as a human[s] unleashes their will over another.  Premeditated immoralities, errors in judgement and accidents impact others.  Taking years to recover.

Then the unforeseen occurs throwing us into shock.  Unbalancing our lives.  Questioning our whole existence.  The aftermath of such an event can send us plummeting into depression at a fast rate.

Doctors refer to this as Situational Depression.  Also known as a condition called Adjustment Disorder.  A traumatic event/s changes our circumstances.  Our normal routines have been zapped with an upheaval.

How Do You Compartmentalise Your Life?Do you think the internet has reduced our concentration spans?  It deliver’s many forms of stimulation.  Jumping from one site to another.  We don’t keep our attention in one place for too long.  Yet there are times when we compartmentalise each and every task.  Concentrating; not allowing anything to interrupt us until the job is done.

Distractions are everywhere.  With our busy schedules we must exercise discipline over the mind.

Our lives revolve around two main environments.  Home and school or how we earn a living.  Yet it is far more complex.  When we divide our time into compartments we get a better look at all the responsibilities.

How Do You Compartmentalise Your Life?Home:  Relaxation, Entertainment, Rent or Mortgage, Bills, Repairs, Meals, Cleaning, Garden and/or Pool Maintenance

Family:  Mother, Father, Siblings, Children, Partner, Friends, Expectations, Customs and Rituals, Celebrations

Work:  Relationships, Deadlines, Pressures, Earnings, Meetings, Events

 Activities:  Expenses, Pleasures, Activity (E.g. Fishing or Scrapbooking)

This can be divided into smaller components.

Sibling: School, Homework, Friends, Activities, Illness, Appointments, Hobbies, Invitations.

Throughout the day we have various duties and responsibilities to attend to.  Our attention is determined by how we have arranged our life.  Each area gives us joy, pleasure, pressures, burdens and unhappiness.

Maintaining a single-mindedness becomes difficult when we are faced with a number of problems in different areas of our daily lives.

How Do You Respond To Challenging Behaviour?We are surrounded by different personality types.  Some individuals we enjoy, while others we struggle to keep our emotions in check.  They seem to bring the worst out in us.  How do you respond to challenging behaviour?

A married couple reached out to a counsellor seeking guidance.  Their union had been strained for some time and they were seeking solutions.  The husband says, “if only my wife would change our lives would be better”.  The wife says, “our lives would be happier if only my husband changed”.

It’s an unrealistic expectation to demand that others alter their behaviour in order to suit our requirements.  Most people aren’t mind readers so it is near impossible for this to occur.  We maintain our equilibrium when we accept individuals for who they are, not how we expect them to be.
